Bass And A Gar

Deep end of main lake points and deep ends of secondary points over 15′ – 25′ for water with chunky rocks in the Grand Glaize arm of the lake. Presentation of the spoon was jerking the spoon off the bottom and letting it flutter down, crank bait was a medium speed retrieve and jig was dragging and hopping off the bottom.

Fishing has been tough the past few days. Ameren has slowed down the generation of water through the dam, which has moved the fish from points, bluff ends and channel banks near the main channels where the current from the dam brought a buffet of food to the bass. The quality bass seem to be moving to their summer hideouts and a bit harder to find and catch. The boat traffic this holiday weekend also limited fishing locations and time of fishing to early morning and evening. However, fish are still being caught all around the lake on typical summer baits, worms, jigs, crank baits and shaky heads from Crock-o-Gator. This morning my 6 year old grandson, Landen, caught a 4 foot gar on a crank bait. Gar, while ugly and primitive put up a wild and strong fight. Landen, landed the big gar on a spinning rod with 12lb test….it was a blast to watch.
