Fishing Notes

After having a miserable day fishing yesterday, I thought that I would stay close to home in the Glaize today and do a lot of searching and experimenting in the waters that I am most familiar with to see if/what changed to cause such a tough bite yesterday for myself and many tournament anglers. While I did not notice much change other than about a 1/2 to 1 degree drop in the water temperature, I did notice that some shad and big gizzard shad were off of the banks, swimming high in the water column in groups. The shad that I could visibly see breaking the surface were about 10-20 yards off the banks, mostly on channel banks near the main points. I also noticed on my graph very tight balls of bait fish holding over about 12′-17′ of water and lots of shad balls in creek channels. Today as part of my search for a bite, I threw the jerkbait, jig, buzzbait, spinnerbait, Zara Spook, deep diving and square bill crank baits. While I was only out a short time, so not very conclusive, the jerkbait bite worked the best with steady movement and very short twitches. However, for tournament fisherman looking for the big bites, I did not experience any of those today and I feel that the buzz bait bite and spinner bait bite shallow should still produce quality fish.
