Fishing Notes |

It was a pleasure fishing today with Lake of the Ozarks #1 rate guide, Jack Uxa of Jacks Guide Service. Today Jack showed me the depth of his multi species capabilities as we fished below the dam on the Osage River. As the ice invaded the main lake last night and thus made it impossible to launch on the main lake, PB2, Coffman, MM2 Ramp and as reported by James Dill, Shawnee Bend Access were all frozen this morning. So, Jack and I launched on the river below Bagnell Dam. The generation from the dam was heavy initially and with moderate winds, boat control was difficult, but Jack is a master and we fished several areas of the river. While ultimately we were fishing for bass, Jack caught a 20 pound plus paddle fish on a spoon (ironic, eh?, Spoonbill on a Spoon). We had two other paddle fish break us off, just happen stance that the spoon bill were in the area of heavy bait fish that we were targeting for bass. Today was the very first time that I have ever seen a paddle fish caught and boated – on spinning tackle. Then Jack proceeded to catch 3 monster drum, now we bass fisherman really dislike drum and Jack was not fishing for them, 3 absolute monsters nailed his jig. Jack did proceed to catch a keeper bass on the jig. While the bite was again today not very good, it was a pretty cool outing with Jack, as usual. |
