Fishing Notes

Today my good friend, LOZ’s number one fishing guide Jack Uxa and I fished the Anglers in Action Thanksgiving Open Buddy Challenge tournament. There were 135 boats in the tournament today with some of Lake of the Ozarks best bass fisherman. Jack and I finished in 14th place and got a check with our 14.02 pounds. The tournament, one of LOZ’s favorite, paid out 19 places for top weight and 19 places for Big Bass. The number one bag of fish was 22+ pounds and big bass 7.7 pounds. After those top prizes the weights were kind of off, after a few great bags including 18 pounds for LOZ Fishing News Legend Dale Burgman, the weights fell off to a few 15 and 14 pound bags and 12 something pounds got a check. After working the buzz bait early without any success other than a few light bites, we adjusted to fishing the most windy points we could find from the 20mm – about the 8mm. We did fish some bluffs for a while without any bites. The bite was quite tough. It seemed that we caught a keeper about every 2 hours, actually not quite that but that is what it seemed. We chased the windiest points we could find in that running zone. Most of the day, Jack would throw the white/chartuese spinner in the front of the boat and I was throwing the white/red spinner in the back of the boat. The spinner we were throwing were 3/4 oz Strike King Spinners. Thanks to the Big Bass Bash input from Denny Brauer earlier this year, I purchased a bunch of Strike King spinners and today that purchased paid off. You can get these spinners at Fitz Fishing in Osage Beach. All of our fish today came on or near main lake points with strong wind with the bites coming anywhere from 5-25 feet off the bank. Big rocks on these banks/points were also a key to the bite. The 3/4 oz spinner sinks fast and stays low, thus giving us the opportunity to bounce and flick the bait off the rocks, which was a key to our bite today. I am so impressed by the great tournament skills of Jack Uxa. It was Jack that had us chasing the strong wind, not just fishing every single point. He also kept us searching for these specific points when our bite was tough. It was simply a heads down and grind it out day, that paid off in the end with a tournament check, Pics will be available soon under the BB.com tournaments tab. I would encourage every BB member to hire Jack for guide trip this winter. Jack specializes in winter trips and he guarantees you will catch fish. In the winter, you may catch the fish of a lifetime on LOZ. Leave your boat at home and Jack will take you fishing. Trust me members, Jack is the very best and you will enjoy your outing with him and learn more than you can ever imagine. It was a great pleasure and awesome experience for me to actually fish a tournament today with Jack.
