Fishing Notes

Hey guys its been awhile!!! Dad and i have been down at Grand lake, Oklahoma preparing and fishing the Ozarks division BFL. This week down there started off real tough. Dad and i went fishing on Wednesday when the wind was whipping around at 20MPH and snow and sleet was heavy!! This was one of the nastiest days i have ever fished. We started in the mid lake area where the water was stained and cold, about 37-38 degrees. We fished the whole day without a single bite! we were mainly targeting steep banks in the creeks and coves around the mid lake area. we could see the fish on the bottom but couldn’t get them to bite. So the next day of practice i talked dad into going to the dam area. Keep in mind Bob practicing to be a boater and i am practicing as a co angler for BFL. We head all the way to the dam and started idling around for bait. We noticed that the water clarity down at the 1 MM was insane!! we could see down about 12 feet. we fished around in a couple creeks with no luck we left the super clear water and headed up a few miles to more clear water but not as clear as 1mm. Then our luck changed a little. Dad and i got in this really long narrow creek that had great depth, in this area i finally got a bite but missed the fish. so we continued to fish this creek with bait and fish on the graph. Then dad calls out “i got one” it was so exciting because we haven’t caught one in a day in a half!! The fish comes up and its a Crappie!! we were like thats ok there should be some bass around to. We sat there for 20 minutes and caught crappie after crappie!! was fun to feel a wiggle on the line!! we headed out of the creek to try some main lake points. The first one we hit i caught a 3 pound spot! were both excited to finally see a bass!! this point had alot of water transition, so we set out to find more spots like this. By the end of the day i caught one more keeper on a main lake point , so our plan for practice Friday was pattern some main lake points for dad to fish tourney day. That plan worked out ok. the fishing has been real tough on grand, not only for us but all anglers so getting a few bites was a big deal!! Friday we caught a couple more bass on the main lake points down by the dam area. One of those fish dad caught was a nice 5 pounder. So he had his game plan for tourney. Run main lake points all day on the lower end and hope for the best!!! it worked Day caught two fish that went 8 pounds and was good enough for 15 place and a check, i took 22 place on the co angle side and that was good enough for a check also. Out of a 140 boat field we were both pleased with how our trip went considering the tough bite all week.
