Fishing Notes

Well Dave and I had a miserable day fishing this tournament.  We took off at 7:30 and pulled out about 2:30 with only two keepers.

The morning started off slow, Dave caught two small ones on the Smithwick Stick Bait.  Our plan was to fish the lower Glaize for a couple of hours and then make a run to Linn Creek and Hurricane Deck area, areas that I have had some good days with big fish the past few weeks.

Well that plan got scrapped quickly as my motor shot craps, in the first 30 minutes running from one spot in the Glaize to another spot.  More than likely some bad gas, same happened to me this time of year last year w my previous boat and had a couple problems like this earlier in the week.  As I gas up on the water v trailering out, I am guessing I am getting the gas from the bottom of the tanks since they dont start to refresh their gas during the off season of boating.

So, our only choice was to put down the trolling motor and fish.  As you have seen from my reports, the Glaize has not provided good fishing for me lately, although it is starting to turn on and some quality fish were caught this weekend in tournaments.

While for the most part, I keep my cool and fish relaxed in tournaments, I was pretty aggravated by this situation.   So, I fished the rest of the day, all pissed off, LOL.  Not a great attitude for fishing.  My bro tried to keep me positive but my head was not in the right place to make adjustments.

So I just pulled out a Dirks Jig and dragged it around as we trolled through big coves, fishing from main point, side creeks to the backs of creeks.  In the backs I fished the stick bait, catching a keeper on the stick bait.   As we fished out toward the points, I caught a 3.5 pounder on the jig.

We caught a few more shorts on the jig and stick bait but no quality and not a lot of bites.  Overall, other than being a beautiful day to fish and fishing with my bro Dave which I always enjoy it was a pretty miserable derby day.

Looking back on it now and talking to a lot of anglers, I should have kept my head in the game and fished the A-Rig over brush and toward the banks, we had plenty of time for me to see brush and fish on my forward facing sonar graph to do that with patience.  However, as I was already aggravated by the motor issues and not able to execute our plan, I was not in the mood to be more aggravated by getting my A-Rig hung up in brush and rocks.   So probably my bad attitude resulted in a bad day fishing.

Hopefully be back on the water in a few days.
