Tough Bite This Week

The bite was very tough this week.   After the large snow and freezing temperatures early this week, the fish must be feeling like winter has finally begun.   Early this week, the lake had lots of ice about 3/4-1/2 of the way back into the coves, so the fishing space was limited to the tops of coves.   As Ameren was also drawing water this week, the tops of cove bite was not on.    As the week progressed with slightly above freezing temps, the ice began to recede about 20 years per day thus making more areas of the coves accessible to fish.  However, the bite was still very tough.  Water temps have dropped in the last 10 days from the mid 40’s to the mid to upper 30’s, it may take some time for the fish to adjust to the winter temps and dropping water.    This week there was a jerkbait bite that produced some 4-5 pound fish.   The banks that these fish came from were steep 70 degree type of banks, the with the best bite coming close to channel swngs and ditches toware the backs of the coves with no ice.    The sunshine this weekend should get the fish active.   While many coves still have some ice toward the backs, there are many coves that are wide open to fish toward the back of the coves.   Brush piles also are producing bites and holding fish.   It seems that the best way to fish is to be confident that you are around fish, bait fish, brush is important and depth transition banks….watch your graph and work your very baits slowly to draw a bite.
