Fishing Report For Week Ending February 27, 2015

Tough bite this week.

The water level is now down to 655, so down about 5 feet for the traditional winter draw down.   Ameren reports that they still plan to draw the water down another foot during early-mid March.   The water temperatures on the main lake have steadily dropped to 37-40 with a bit of colder water nearer the backs of coves and shallow.  Hopefully we will see some warmer days soon which will warm the shallows and backs of creeks quicker than the deeper water.

The bite has been very tough.  I have reports from several fisherman that are getting skunked with no bites, throwing typical winter time baits, jerk bait, A-Rig and Finesse Jigs.

From my observations on the lake, the bait fish seem to be deeper and closer to the bottom, with fish near by on the bottom, sitting on the top of the bait fish or nearby.   Their seem to be catchable fish in the 20-35' depths, but I have not been able to get any bites from these fish.

Fish also are holding on deeper brush piles, 15'-30' of water, these fish do not seem to be in the biting mood either.

Hopefully the fish will soon get used to the new water levels on the lake,  the ever changing water temperature, mix of low pressure and high pressure systems.

This week I will continue to fish the jerkbait in flat colors on overcast days and bright/flashy colors on sunny days.  I will also work the Crock-o-Gator finesse jig and Crock-o-Gator Swamp Bug along with Chompers jig and some other creature baits that I have been working with, such as a white tube, white super fluke jr. and white/salt n pepper grub.   I will also pick up the A-Rig once in a while and slow roll it on the bottom and over brush piles.
